Ack! I'm so envious!

Please to explain the pruning of the bottom of the tomato plants. As the tender of my father's garden, I'm eager to do the right thing.

Probably more compulsive behavior than anything; tomato plants will generally produce fruit no matter what you do, as long as the growing conditions are right. That said, this site has a very good discussion of tomato pruning:

Pruning does help keep the plants healthy, and it makes it easier to spot the monsters (even though hornworms can be gigantic, they're very well camouflaged; one generally notices the decimation first, then goes searching for the beast).

Forgot to say: the photo to the left of the tomatoes shows my neat & tidy tomato plant bottoms.
